My First Birthday

Today was my birthday. I had a GOOD day. This is how it all went down....

Mommy made a couple of cakes for me.

We had lots of good friends come over to help with the celebrating.

We had a taco bar for dinner. I especially liked the black beans.

I also really liked the pink frosting on my cake. I picked it off one little piped frosting dab at a time.

....but it turned my fingers pink...

My friends helped me open presents. I got LOTS of good stuff.

I got to have speed races with my best friend Makenzy.

Then to finish it all off, my mommy made me put my dress back on to get another picture.

It was a tiring day. I never knew 1 could feel so old!

We're baaaack

We got back yesterday afternoon. We had a good time as usual and are sad to be back, especially to be back in the not-as-warm Indiana weather. We got to catch up with our family, eat some good food, soak up a little sun on our pale white legs, drink some Sonic drinks, sew some fun dresses for Sadie, and take lots of naps. I downloaded all of our pictures tonight, and again, as usual, we did not take as many as we intended. Pretty much all of our pictures are from one single day unfortunately. I think my mom and sister took a few others of Sadie while we went on a little anniversary trip Wednesday through Friday. Daniel and I did a little relaxing at Barton Creek Resort for our five year anniversary. It was bliss. I highly recommend it! We had a nice time going for walks, laying by the pool, and catching up on reading. I read an entire book in two days. I haven't read hardly at all since Sadie was born. So that was the best treat. It was nice to get away and spend some quality time with Daniel. What a wonderful treat for 5 wonderful years!

While we were sad to leave our family and the nice Texas weather, we are glad to be back in our own home and get back into a routine with Sadie. I'll post some pics from the-one-day-on-our-trip-that-we-took-pictures in a separate post. Oh, and it's just four days until Sadie's birthday!!! Yeay!

Wellness update

UPDATE, Saturday: Sadie seemed to be just as well as could be today. She had a very rough night last night, but had a few really good naps today and was happy and laughing most of the day. I really think she had a sinus infection as well as the ear infection. She and Daniel went to the grocery store this afternoon to get something quick for dinner, and Daniel said she was waving at everyone they walked by in the store. :) I went to urgent care this morning and was diagnosed with walking pneumonia. I had a rough night too and was feeling absolutely horrible this morning. So honestly the thought of pneumonia crossed my mind. I'm feeling better tonight than I have all day. I'm hoping that will be the case in the morning when we get on our flight. Daniel called Continental Airlines earlier today to try and get our flight changed (moved to Monday or Tuesday or a direct flight or to just get off in Houston where our connecting flight is). There was nothing they could do for us without us having to pay a $300 change fee. We're pretty irritated. Oh well. So Sadie and I are going to be flying in the morning. Hopefully the pressure changes don't hurt Sadie's ears. Hopefully I have enough energy to go through with the whole thing tomorrow. And hopefully we don't infect anyone else on the flight. It really makes no sense that the airlines cannot work with you.

Sadie's doctor's appointment went well yesterday, and all indications are that the infection from two weeks ago is cleared. She is scheduled for a VCUG and renal ultrasound on March 25th. From what we've been able to gather, approximately 30% of cases of UTIs before the age of 4 are a result of an underlying issue with the kidneys or the way urine is excreted from the kidneys. This time period also marks the most active development of a person's kidneys. Any infections that occur during these first few years of Sadie's life can leave permanent scar tissue and can effect the kidneys' function permanently. So this is the reason for the tests. It is pretty standard operating procedure after just one UTI (especially given Sadie's high fever and vomiting), but again, there is only a 30% chance of something more serious. We will update more after the 25th.

On another note, Sadie and I have had colds all week. It seems to be going around and involves a lot of chest congestion and subsequent coughing. Sadie was really acting like she didn't feel well today and this evening started running a fever. We ended up running her by an urgent care center since she's had the cold for a week and just now started running a fever, and she has an ear infection. Our poor girl just can't seem to get well. It's so sad. We're leaving for Texas on Sunday morning, and that could be a miserable flight for her if her ears are bothering her with the pressure changes. That was part of the reason we decided to go ahead and take her to urgent care tonight instead of waiting until the morning. So we are just praying now that she is going to be feeling better by Sunday morning when we get on our flight. Daniel is not going with us on Sunday, but will come a few days later. So I am already a little anxious about the flight and hoping Sadie does well. So for whoever reads this post this weekend, please pray for us, especially for Sadie to feel better so she can enjoy some family time in Texas.

Here's to healthier days in the Foley family! :)

Leaving a Legacy

Warning, this may not be a very interesting post to most. It doesn't contain any pictures or cute stories about Sadie. So proceed with caution!

Daniel and I have been talking recently about the point of blogging. We originally started the blog to be able to update our family and friends far, far away about everything that is going on with Sadie. I think I also did it for selfish reasons because the blog was a means of expressing myself a bit, I guess. Well, as time has gone on, we know, for the most part, the handful of people who read the blog because you guys call us or email us when something out of the ordinary happens. This handful of folks includes my mom, sister, and brother (of course!) and a few very good friends...we love you guys for reading! So we feel comfortable with most everything we put on here. Though something that has been bothering me for a while is that I feel a little selfish to continually go on about Sadie, as if we think our child is more important, more special, more wonderful, etc. than other babies. So we've tried to write about other things. In the process of doing that, I again feel selfish, as if we think our lives are interesting enough to share. There have been many times where I've thought about cancelling the whole blog thing all together. Those are generally the times when you'll see a lull in posts. What is the purpose? We really only have a handful of readers, and we could easily just send those few people pictures and updates via email.

Well, as it is, Daniel and I discuss the blogging subject from time to time. We talk about new topics for posts. We talk about if we really have anyone reading our blog. We talk about the purpose. We have come to one conclusion....won't this be an interesting collection of writings for Sadie to read one day? Won't it be neat (for lack of a better word) for us to read about our life when we were new parents. Won't it be wonderful to reflect on Sadie's first years when she is graduating from high school?

When we were in Texas in January, we went to a small cocktail party at Daniel's grandmother's (Naunie's) house the night before Daniel's cousin's ordination. One of Naunie's dear friends had flown in from California for the ordination and was talking about all kinds of interesting topics. She grew up in the Philippine's, the daughter of some sort of dignitary, and had a very interesting life. However, as Daniel's mother and Naunie were sharing their own stories, Naunie's friend (for the life of me I can't remember her name! So sorry about that...) kept speaking of the importance of "leaving a legacy" as she called it. She spoke of how important it is to write down stories from your life for you children and children's children to read. As she said, once we pass on, there is no one there to carry on our legacy (and our family's legacy) if we haven't shared it with them.

How many times have I thought, I wish I knew more of how my grandparents fell in love. I wish I knew more about when my parents were children. I even wish I knew more about when I was a child or in high school. It's amazing the things you forget in just 15 years! I have really enjoyed hearing my mom's stories during the last year about when each of us children (me and my three siblings) were born. At the same time, there are definitely things that my mom doesn't completely remember, because really why would you? So many wonderful memories have come and gone since then.

Since I was a little girl, I have always wanted to write in a journal. I took a stab at in junior high, but quickly realized my sister was reading it, and so I quit....just like that! I wrote a little in a pregnancy journal, but oh how I wish I had done a better job. I think I quit halfway through the pregnancy because I was so worn out and there were so many other things to think about and do.

So here we are. We have successfully chronicled much of Sadie's first year. We don't claim to be interesting. We don't claim that other new parents aren't experiencing the same exact moments that are just as special with their babies. We don't claim that anything about our life is more important than the next family's. However, we have finally realized the purpose of why we have been driven to write this blog. Yes, we still want our family (in particular) to be able to keep up with us and know what we're doing from day to day since we don't get to see them regularly. However, we know now the importance of leaving a legacy, especially for Sadie and any siblings she may have in the future. How special these memories are!

Look whoooo's turning 1?

Sadie's birthday invitations came in yesterday, and I am thrilled! They are so stinkin cute (at least that's what I think)! I got them from: The Elegant Ellaphant. She has such cute designs. You'll have to check her out if you're in the market for some kids invites or baby announcements. I'm especially in love with a couple of baby boy birth announcements (say that three times fast!) she has. Hmmm...maybe D and I need to have a baby boy so I can buy those announcements!!! Kidding, but I will be using her again for something!!! Oh, and her stuff is customizable. So you can change colors, fonts, and wording to suit.

Here's the soon-to-be birthday girl's birthday invitation....

Can you believe we are already to 1 YEAR! Where has the last year gone?

What a nice weekend....

I LOVE March. Daniel and I were married in March (March 20), our sweet pea was born in March (March 28), and Spring starts in March!!! What a perfect month!

We had a pleasant spring-like weekend this weekend! Oh Spring, how we've missed you! Friday evening we went to "happy hour" (though I only had water!) with some of my friends from work. Sadie was very well behaved for an evening out. So we were able to enjoy some good conversation and food at Muldoon's, one of Daniel's favorites!

We did a few cleaning projects around the house on Saturday morning (though if you walked into our house this morning, you wouldn't know it! ha!), and I worked on some ideas to get our house more organized and our budget more organized. I am so looking forward to staying home and concentrating on some of these areas a little more (really I am)! I feel like, since becoming parents, our house is in mass-chaos. I used to clean and reorganize our cabinets and closets pretty regularly, and now things have just built up. We are in desperate need of mass reorganization! Sadie played all Saturday morning and then slept in her carseat that afternoon as we ran some errands. We grilled out that evening and went for a short walk (because it was a little windy).

Yesterday we went to church, and then got to take care of Wilson again yesterday evening, which upset Sadie. Hmph! I don't know how we're going to get her over this being scared of dogs deal that she has going on. We took Wilson for a walk, and Sadie and I had to stay about 10 steps in front of Daniel and Wilson to keep Sadie from wimpering. So that was a shorter walk than we had intended, but it was nice none the less. We got home, had dinner, made some Neiman Marcus cookies (my fave!), and went to bed to dream sweet spring-like dreams!

There is just something about March that makes you enjoy life more....wouldn't you agree?!

An update and good news!

So Daniel and I misunderstood what yesterday's results were supposed to tell us. Evidently these results were only to tell us that the correct bacteria was being treated, and it was. We will take Sadie back next week for a follow-up appointment, and the nurse thought at that appointment they would do another catheter and sample. Sadie has to be finished with her antibiotics for this next culture to ensure the infection is completely cleared up. She has been feeling much better. Her appetite is back for the most part, but she is still having some stomach issues. I'm sure these will endure for as long as the antibiotics last. Yuck! Poor Sadie. And poor Ms. Jane, who had to wash two sets of clothing today for Sadie. The important thing is that Sadie seems to be feeling good and is happy as a lark!

The good news we have to share is that I will be assuming a new job position in April. My boss? Little Miss Sadie!!! We are so very excited about this new opportunity for our family! I'm just counting down the days now! :)

Sadie update

Sadie is feeling much better today.... finally!!!! Above is a picture we took of her today for her birthday invitations. That's not the face of a sick baby, huh? She had a low grade fever at a few points today, but nothing high, and nothing that made her feel bad enough to warrant Tylenol. So we made it a WHOLE day without Tylenol!!! This is good because she's been taking it several times a day since Wednesday. So we were really hoping today we wouldn't have to give any more to her. The antibiotic is causing an upset stomach (another reason to try and lay off the Tylenol). So she still isn't eating much. She had some Goldfish, Cheerios, and a jar of Cinnamon Apple Oatmeal baby food today. That's it! She wasn't interested in anything else. So hopefully that will get better. She has been drinking really well yesterday and today. So we think we're good in that area at least.

We're anxiously awaiting further results tomorrow from the 72 hour culture taken from her urine sample on Thursday night at the ER. We'll try to write an update tomorrow night.

Thank you to everyone who has said a little prayer for us, and especially for Sadie. We have a couple of other friends right now with sick babies too, and we are thinking about you guys as well and praying for you. Parenting is not for the faint of heart. It's so very difficult to watch your baby suffering and to worry BEYOND BELIEF about her state of health. It comes with the job though, and we happily accept the worries in turn for all the treasured moments we get to enjoy with her.
