Our new second home

So it's been a tough couple of days for Sadie.
She started running a fever Wednesday afternoon, but it was low and she had no other symptoms. So we assumed it was teething which she has been working hard at lately. She ran a fever that evening and night, and it peaked around 102.4 in the middle of the night. So I took her to the doctor yesterday morning. There were some blisters in the back of her throat, but a strep test came back negative. The doctor said it was probably viral and to just keep her hydrated and feed her soft foods, in case her throat was real sore.

Then at 6:30 yesterday evening her fever peaked to 104.9 (taken under her arm). We quickly put her in a lukewarm bath and gave her some cold juice and Tylenol. Within 30 minutes it was down to 102.7.

Then at 10:30, her temperature had gotten back up to 104.5. After another bath, cold juice and Tylenol, I called the St. Vincent Children's hotline. The nurse that called us back recommended we take Sadie to the ER. So to the ER we went. The doctor there didn't believe the blisters on her throat looked bad enough to be causing such a high fever. The only other thing he could think that it might be was a UTI, since she really didn't have any symptoms other than the blisters. So they did a catheter to get a urine sample and tested that quickly (about 45 minutes). Sure enough, the results came back positive. In fact, her white blood cell count was off the charts...."packed"...too many to count. So the doctor prescribed an antibiotic and sent us on our way. He said that since we'd be giving her the antibiotic every 12 hours for 10 days, we might as well start at 7:00 or something more convenient than 3:00. Well at 7:00 this morning, before having any antibiotics, Sadie started vomiting. She was extremely pale and shivering, but her temp was only 101.1. So we started trying to give her some food/drink to help her out a bit. She couldn't hold anything down and was heaving alot. So I called her doctor at 7:45 and explained everything that was going on. He said to bring her in, and they would check her vitals and give her an antibiotic shot. By the time we got to the doctor, Sadie had perked up a bit (that would be short lived with the shots coming!). All checked out alright. So Dr. Miller talked to us and gave us a good explanation of bladder infections in babies. Evidently it's extremely rare for children under 4 to get bladder infections, and especially this young. There is a possibility she has a kidney infection as well, but we won't know that until the results of her culture (taken from last night's urine sample) are ready... probably on Monday. Dr. Miller did say that high fever and vomiting are pretty characteristic of a kidney infection. If that is the case, Sadie will have to have some more tests to ensure nothing else is wrong. Hopefully that won't be the case. Right?!

She seems to be doing better overall now. She's drank almost 8 ounces of fluids (juice, water, and formula) so far today and is snacking on some Goldfish crackers as we speak. Yesterday we had to actually force a bottle into her mouth because she just wasn't interested, yet she NEEDED fluids badly. So we're much happier with her excitement for eating and drinking today. The shot at the doctor was rough. She had to have 2 due to the amount she needed. So those were bad and she pretty much slept for the hour that we had to wait at the hospital after that to ensure there were no adverse reactions. Hopefully all will go well today, and she won't have any more vomiting episodes or fever spikes. If that happens, she may have to be admitted into the hospital for IV medicine.

Anyway, Carmel St. Vincent is our new second home. We've been there 3 days this week and for hours at a time. Hopefully we don't have to go back today or tomorrow. Here are pics from this morning after returning from the doctor.

She got a couple of super cooool band aids out of the deal.

She kept making this face while she was eating some Goldfish and Cheerios earlier. Not sure why! :)

Oops, I dropped one.....

Clap your hands...

Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker's man....

Sadie now assumes the position when we sing this song. She's still not sure what to do with herself on the ...roll 'em up, roll 'em up...part though!

What's for dinner?

This is what we had for dinner tonight.....

Looks good huh? Well maybe it doesn't look that great, but it was mighty tasty, and I told my mom I would share the "recipe". When I told her what I had made for dinner tonight, crickets. She didn't say anything. I guess she didn't think it would taste very good. Then she said...sounds interesting. Hmph! Well, guess what, it WAS interesting and tasty too!

Basically I sauteed some sliced onion in butter and olive oil. Then I layered that in a casserole dish and put raw chicken breasts, seasoned with season salt on top. Then I combined a melted package of cream cheese, a few spoonfuls of sour cream, and a few spoonfuls of mayonnaise and heated through. I tossed some French Fried Onions in and spread all on top of the chicken breast. Cooked it in a 375 degree oven for about 45 minutes, and whala! We ate it on top of plain rice with a blt salad on the side (iceberg lettuce, cherry tomatoes, bacon bits, and thousand island dressing) since the chicken is a little rich. Oh and I used lowfat sour cream and mayo. So it was healthy right?!

I know we get tired of the same old things over and over (chilli, spaghetti, chicken and rice, grilled chicken salad, tacos, carnitas, etc.). So it's nice to create a totally different taste sometimes. I'm sure the recipe could be perfected...so try it out! :)

p.s. I promise I am not going to start a cooking blog...I'll spare everyone that pain and leave the creative cooking up to my sister!

Picture of the week

Daniel getting creative with our camera:

Oops! He accidently focused in on the foreground instead of the background. Bad idea in our house where table legs are all but forgotten these days when we do a quick sweep dusting tour of our neglected home.

Sadie update

Our Crazy Life

So it's only been a couple of weeks since we gave a developmental update, but my how quickly things change these days! I've been meaning to update on several of Sadie's new happenings. So here they all are in one post. She is standing, yes standing on her own for short periods of time. That started two weekends ago. She is saying "uh oh" when she falls or drops something. Really it sounds more like, "uh, uh", but it is so endearing. She can wave with her hand open and close now instead of just a plain wave as she was doing before. And she has 5 teeth with one more working its way in. Boy does it hurt now when she bites down on your finger!

So there we go. So much new every single day. She is just fun, fun, fun!

Dog Days of February

Some friends of ours have a dog, Wilson, and cat, Asher. When they go out of town for a few days, we watch Wilson and Asher, going over twice a day to feed, water, walk, and play. Daniel and I shared this duty before Sadie was born, and Sadie got to go over there with us when she was only 2 weeks old. However since then she has either been sick on those dog and cat sitting weekends, or we've had other things going on. So this weekend I was really excited to take Sadie over to meet our furry friends.

To sum it up, Sadie was thrilled yet cautious with Asher. She wanted so badly to pet him, but would chicken out and bury herself in me, giggling all the while. Asher was not a fan! He even hissed at her one time when we were over there. GASP! On the other hand, Wilson was over the top elated to meet Sadie. So. very. excited. He was jumping and going CRAZY. Sadie....scared to death. Poor girl. She kept wimpering even after Wilson went outside. Tonight we tried it again....same results. :(

Here are some pics:

Chores, chores, chores

Daniel and I, we don't really agree with all of those laws prohibiting child labor. We think starting early is the way to helping Sadie develop good work habits.

Here are some pics of Sadie helping do the laundry. The problem is....

Sadie's idea of helping is to pull the laundry off the couch (or wherever we have it piled) one by one until it is all on the ground.

She LOVES doing her chores!

and we love ALL the 'help'!
Disclaimer: we aren't really making Sadie do chores...she just likes to help and be part of whatever is going on. :)

Heartache

My heart has been broken this week by the story of this family I have been praying for. Their 11 month old daughter, Cora Paige, went to be with Jesus on Sunday after being diagnosed only 3 weeks earlier with cancer. My heart hurts and I have cried so much the last two days for the pain Cora's parents must be experiencing.

It's funny how much clarity you gain when you become a parent. I suddenly became aware of the extra treasures in life...and things that were important before, aren't anymore. You also inherit something every new parent before you has also inherited...a new extreme sensitivity to suffering children and an undescribable connection to the parents of these children. Cora's story has touched Daniel and I to the point that neither of us can get it out of our minds. Maybe it is because Cora was only a few weeks older than Sadie. So we can imagine all the developmental milestones Sadie has experienced and know that Cora's parents were sharing that same joy around those same moments. But her story has also reminded us that we should treasure the "everyday" moments and that our ULTIMATE goal for our children is for them to be in Heaven. Our pastor just spoke in Bible class last weekend that it is never too early to teach your children the Lord's prayer and pray with them and teach them about God. It is amazing the peace that comes with knowing we all WANT to be with Jesus one day. We will endure no suffering in Heaven. THIS is what we want for our children, and sweet Cora is there now.

Please keep The Macs in your prayers. What an incredible example in faith and love they are.

Mamaw Lovin'
